I understand your compassion, but we had 5% official unemployment before the recession and now we have 10% official unemployment.

A country can't bankrupt itself for 5% of the population. It just can't.

Unemployment is a fluid mixture anyway. People come and go from the national workforce, it's not the same particular people all the time. Traditionally, the average length of unemployment is about 6 mos. in good times, a little longer in recessions.
