Food for simplistic and mostly inaccurate thought.

Label it by the party with the most power in congress, and you'll see a very different story. Of course that would be simplistic as well since there are many other factors affected the deficit, and also delay periods before the results of policies can take effect.

Presidents and the Federal Debt

I looked up how much the REAL U.S. Federal Debt went up, or went down, under each of these post WW II Presidents... (the ones who were President during most of our lives).

("Real Debt" means the national debt in Dollars, adjusted for inflation, and measured as a percentage of the Gross National Product - G.N.P. - of the United States. The way most economists prefer to look at a nation's debt.)

Republican Deficit Hypocrisy

The human capacity for self-delusion never ceases to amaze me, so it shouldn't surprise me that so many Republicans seem to genuinely believe that they are the party of fiscal responsibility. Perhaps at one time they were, but those days are long gone.

This fact became blindingly obvious to me six years ago this month when a Republican president and a Republican Congress enacted the Medicare drug benefit, which former U.S. Comptroller General David Walker has called "the most fiscally irresponsible piece of legislation since the 1960s."
