Does that sound like where we diverge? You're right that I have thought about it a lot. I don't know all that much about your concept of sacrifice. You've written just a few paragraphs so to a large extent I'm filling in a lot based on a few buzzwords and themes you mentioned and arguing against that as a a proxy for more complete info from you and making some pattern assumptions. I'm not in a position to isolate with confidence just where we diverge. I suspect that it's fundamental, but I'm not at all confident of that. I did have occasion to think about you when I woke up this morning to news that we have another foot or two of snow coming on top of the two feet still on the ground. The DC area roads are in the worst straits than I've ever seen before. Earlier in our discussion I mentioned that I recognized the appropriateness of a sacrifice mentality only in an emergency. I think the situation here would qualify and that sacrifice is called for. Appropriate sacrifices in this case are pretty minor, but the principle is there. Folks should stay off the roads, for example, unless it's an emergency. Just stay home, even if you can safely get to the gym or the Superbowl party. By going out you risk making it harder for others to get to where they really need to go. Don't drive to the supermarket if you have any food in the house. You need food, not your favorite food. And if you do go to the supermarket, where the shelves are pretty bare (I walked), don't take more than you really need. Leave something for others. Minor sacrifice, for sure, but still illustrative of the principle of sacrifice. Next week when the snow has melted, back to self-actualization. <g>
