L: My point is that defining the good life as doing what you want when you want to do it and does not necessarily mean that you run roughshod over everyone else as you seem to have elided in forming your conclusion. If you're responsible and recognize the legal and social constructs than enable your good life, you contribute without thinking of your contribution as sacrifice. So, I think your focus on sacrifice is off target. I think the key for what you're seeking is not sacrifice but 1) responsibility and 2) respect for the enabling societal framework. You can model both of those with nary a thought of sacrifice.

V: Very good points through your argument including what I did not paste here.

Without data on economic class and motivation I think we will have to set aside the argument on why people join the service. Certainly I am not excluding the concept that some of these people are "self actualizing" as well as serving. But we must remember here that this is a relatively well paid volunteer force and they are not going to be sacrificing economically to serve---unlike the previous model.

I think the essence of our debate comes down to points 1 and 2
in the last paragraph of your argument that I pasted above.

I am in complete agreement with that. Those are the goals which not only I seek, but I think society as a whole seeks if we are to self sustain ourselves.

The question then becomes how do we obtain a "responsible"
and "respectful of the enabling societal framework" citizenry?

I submit one of he best IS REQUIRING service of them in some form. We can debate about the form and its manifestations, but do you agree with the principle in general? And if not, how do you align the countries interest with the individual's interest?
