During the Empire days, the Falklands were important to the British Nation as it was a coaling station for the Royal Navy on route to the Southern Oceans and the Pacific. They are not needed now as the Royal Navy uses oil amongst several other factors and considerations.

The Falklands are not part of Britain in the same way the Shetland Isles and Outer Hebridies are not part of Chile
