I don't know how many times I have to say that I don't get down into the weeds on this issue like that. I have many other things to do with my work time and leisure time than modeling potential public policy outcomes to a degree that no one on this thread could do competently.

You worked in government policy analysis long enough to know that. What will anyone benefit from a couple of thin paragraphs from an Internet poster? Do you have a detailed econometric model to share with all of us?

Of course not. Let's be real.

So true.

My Canadian girlfriend and I were talking about this yesterday. In Canada, paying somewhat higher taxes in order to guarantee that all citizens can afford healthcare, and that they will be supported if they become disabled, is considered to be a basic social contract. As an individual, she may never need the government's help, but she's happy to do her part so that those who do will have it.

She really doesn't understand why people in this country are so resistant to that idea.
