Most of them, including this one, try to build their case by ignoring several important facts when considering competition between Apple and other mobile platforms: 1) The important number is iPhone + iPod Touch. In three or so weeks it will be the iPhone + the iPod Touch + the iPad. While various versions of the Android OS are being spewed out on a dizzying variety of telephone hardware, they are not grabbing the tens of millions of young people, a goodly proportion of whom are increasingly invested in the iPhone OS, on iPod Touches. In 2011 I predict that Apple will sell over 100 million of these three mobile devices (plus whatever else they may introduce before the end of 2011. 2) Apple has significant advantages in an e-commerce eco-system. iTunes is unmatched for consumer purchasing and managing digital content and software applications. Smartphone Apps alone, I believe, were a $4 billion business in 2009, and it will continue growing like a wildfire on a windswept prairie. 3) Related to that, artists, writers, filmakers and all sorts of creative endeavors will end up bypassing the usual avenues for pushing their work to the market and go direct to the consumer via Apple. 4) Apple is making big big margines in hardware and software and doing all right in content and iPhoneOS apps. Google is giving away Android. You probably remember the graph posted on this thread about the average number of apps started in December and January by the various platforms. Android's was 3,000 and something. iPhone's was 13,000 and something (I think those numbers are about right, but it is from memory, so please correct me if I am incorrect). 5) A large user base, many of whom will upgrade to each new iteration of the iPhone. Android is currently building its user base. So, lets all think about this competition, because it is and will be an important and entertaining one. But lets not kid ourselves or let these writers kid us that Google might have an advantage in these early stages of the match
