It's essentially the tactic of reductio ad absurdum. It's very effective propaganda-wise, but it doesn't deal directly with the issue at hand. He says being gay is the equivalent of being a pedophile. Or that gay marriage is the equivalent of group sex. I could say that being an Evangelical is the equivalent of being lobotomized. Or I could say Creationism is for intellectual morons. But is that really a serious debate? I agree with your sentiment that equal protection can be taken too far. I personally draw the line at civil unions. It's why I won't go as far as forcing church's to go against their teachings and marry gays in say a Catholic church. That's going too far. It's why I believe polygamy is wrong as well. Polygamy has been shown to lead to the devaluation of women, their treatment as cattle, and has deleterious impacts on their children. So I don't believe in group marriage. It's also why, although I believe in gay civil unions, I balk at adoption. It's not that I believe gays will engage in behavior unsuitable for children at a higher rate than heteros. However, I don't believe that our children should be subject to any social experiments...until we know more. You see, to me, if two consenting adults want to get married, I think there's no harm in it. Live and let live. If it extends to an innocent third party, who has no choice or is not of the age to give legal consent, then I'd object. There is nothing on this earth more sacred than our children. And they must be protected until we know more. As you can see, my positions are subtle and to smaller minds may seem duplicitous. However, they are what they are, because most things in life are not black and white. It's also why I don't cleanly fall into either Dem or GOP categories. My views don't uniformly fit either party. I suspect most people are like that, even though they will not admit it. Most people are so desirous of fitting in, they spend a lot of time eliminating the subtleties in their thinking. I think that's a shame. It's in the subtle distinctions that we can find compromise that allows us to grow as a society...and that means social experimentation to see what works and what doesn't. Serious esponses are welcome. Of course, I expect rational responses from folks like ten and tejek and nutjob flames from folks like brumar.
