We started becoming the richest country in the world, largely because we where freer than most of the rest of the world. In other words we had less rules, or rules that restricted freedom less.

Come on.

We became rich because we had abundant energy... in fact were a big exporter of energy. And because we have the richest soil on earth.... the breadbasket. We didn't have to worry about food or energy so we could pursue more lofty goals. Food and energy were the cornerstones.

Capitalism is certainly the best system in the world for creating wealth, but frankly we became rich as we adopted more strong institutions that create wealth.... and yes institutions are rules. We are a nation that respects our institutions and the rule of law. Another cornerstone.

The governments had the wealth to build great infrastructure. Great infrastructure.... now that's freedom. Freedom to concentrate on wealth building not logistics. Another cornerstone.

Freedom? Yes we have freedom to operate within the rules. To repeat the football analogy, you would have no great football players without the football game rules... the rules allow greatness by creating a level playing field in which all can compete and be comparatively measured and rewarded. A touchdown means nothing without rules.

Everything you touch every day is taxed (multiple times) and regulated by the government Tim. They give you your water, your roads, your healthy food, your safe housing. Yours is a Don Quixote effort.... much better to work for better government than smaller government. Smaller government means a weaker and poorer country... look around the world and you can easily see that.
