Yes, they were considered to be inappropriate just as now some people consider a marriage between people of the same sex to be inappropriate. Not "just as", they where considered marriages by essentially everyone. Why do you all worry about things that don't matter in the grand scheme of things? I don't worry all that much about it, at least not in a direct sense. I worry a bit about judicial activism that could be sparked by the issue, but even that isn't one of my larger concerns.
