Turning off the ignition frequently locks the steering column. A bit dicey to do on a curvey road, no?

The driver of the uncontrollable Ford Explorer in Melbourne called 000 only after shifting the car into neutral and removing the keys from the ignition failed to slow or stop the engine acceleration which was under direction of the computerized cruise control.

Many drivers of key-less Toyotas have found holding down the off switch also has no effect on the engine.

Every electrical device fails, so they need to be designed to fail safely - which has obviously not been a design consideration until now.

There are no good answers to your question at the moment. The computer seems to take control leaving standard emergency responses useless.
