"Once the Prius' speed dropped to about 50 mph, Sikes turned off the engine and was able to coast to a stop, the officer said."

What is really frightening is how little we, as drivers, know about our cars. I am not aware of any car that cannot be: A) turned off at any speed, and B) Safely shifted into neutral at any speed.

We should not ever have to do this -- cars should not have this problem.

But when I hear so many people say 'it can't be done' it reminds me that most of us don't bother to know how to do it, and worse, base our beliefs on shared lack of awareness of what to do.
