Rich, you obviously do not understand the ramifications of what you write.

Q will never try or want to have the famous "Intel Inside" reputation. They actually tried that and on many phones you will find "Digital by Qualcomm" stickers on the phones or embossed in the plastic. However it is very understated for a reason

Qualcomm did try and wanted to have the Intel Inside idea applied to Qualcomm. That's what the stickers and embossing on the case of the phones was for. If there was good reason to understate it, then it could have been more understated by keeping it off the case altogether, hiding the chips inside with no external evidence of Qualcomm being inside.

If Qualcomm wants to remain anonymous, the Snapdragon should be called "chip number 3,142" rather than a clever name like Snapdragon which might accidentally create some brand cachet.

Of course we want everyone on Earth to think "Omigosh, I just have to have a Qualcomm device." There is no merit in being a no-name back-room chip maker which nobody could care less about.

I'd like to compete with Qualcomm customers. If they don't like it, they can go to Hell. They are doing a rotten job. A Johny Come Lately like Apple comes bowling in from nowhere, knocks them all off their perches with the human hordes oooing and ahhhhing over the iPhone which is a dopey little device with no Mirsasol, no Snapdragon, no Android, no fuel cell, no altimeter, no cigarette lighter, no Vegemite dispenser, ... the long list of Anita [tm] design and functionality here Message 24294589

Qualcomm could hire a bunch of handset designers and turn them loose to finally, decades late, come up with the pdQ as it was going to be built. If Nokia, Apple, Broadcom, L M Ericsson, Motorola, LG, Samsung, Huawei, HTC, Google, Research in Motion, and the rest don't like it then they can get lost and go and make gumboots or something. Playing Mr Nice Guy and giving away the technology for a ridiculously low price never got anything but another kick in the teeth. I never noticed any love or appreciation for Qualcomm's amazing efforts, just a lot of whining and nastiness. We have Neelie Kroes wanting to attack as appreciation from Europe. We have TD-SCDMA in appreciation from China and we just know how much royalty they'll be paying for that.

Recommendation - accept that Mindy expresses a reasonable point of view, which, given the share price, is felt by a lot of people who are pricing QCOM shares. Dumping on Mindy, especially when the argument is weak, is not good form.

Meanwhile, it looks like some good work in the femtocell department might integrate wifi and LTE and CDMA so multimode devices can connect to broadband backhaul from houses and businesses.

Hi Rich:

While I agree with a lotta things in your post, I disagree with a few your points.

Q will never try or want to have the famous "Intel Inside" reputation. They actually tried that and on many phones you will find "Digital by Qualcomm" stickers on the phones or embossed in the plastic. However it is very understated for a reason. . . . It is now well known that Q is the technology leader in the wireless world. So, let me ask you a couple of questions. Is it now in Q's best interest to trumpet that in their face ?? Will a major PR emphasis result in increased share price ?? Will the consumer care who made the chips and the underlying technology ?? Will Q's blowing their own horn piss off the incumbents (who are their customers) ??

In follow-up to an earlier discussion regarding Q's move into consumer products (ie. consumer electronics), PJ indicated in his keynote speech @ CES 2010 that many consumers really don't know who Qualcomm is; most think that Q it just a name on the stadium where the Chargers play.

Given future of the company in the realm of consumer electronic devices beyond the mobile phone (i.e Snapdragon), it may behoove Q to make consumers more aware of the Qualcomm name. To do so would not necessarily be contradictory to your claim that Q would be "trumpet[ing] in the face of its legacy competitors within the mobile wireless ecosystem.

The entire landscape for wireless ecosystem is changing. It is expanding into the realm of consumer electronics, which has its own legacy ecosystem, which is evolving as well. With these dynamics in play, NOW is the time for Q to lay out strategy to introduce (or re-introduce) the QCOM name to the consumer.

In due respect to your comments, I agree, it should tread carefully, so as not to alienate important, critical players within the newly merged ecosystem. That's something for the PR guys & gals to work out. But sit by silent, at this juncture, IMHO, would be a mistake.
