I don't think Caddell can be labeled as a "Republican" cautioning the Democrats. He is an independent Democrat.

Still, the Democrats will lose many seats in November regardless of Healthcare passage. The issue is just how extensive the losses will be. This is partly due to historical patterns involving off-year elections but also partly due to a growing anti-government, anti-incumbent wave. The healthcare bill has contributed to that. It is easy to point to a Republican winning the Senate seat in Mass. but that is not the only sign (beyond the polls)-- there is now a Republican governor very Democratic New Jersey. That is not an accident or due to confused voters.

I think Caddell's piece highlights two truths - there is a desire for some action on health care, but not this bill. Also, this bill has become damaged goods in many people's minds because it is directly associated with the kind of political deals that people hate - the Louisianna purchase, the Cornhusker kickback, the Federal judge position given to the brother of a Democratic member of the House that is undecided, the Florida deal, etc. It is the same old Washington corruption --- and if the bill was so good, why would elected officials in the President's own party need to be bribed to be willing to vote for it?
I think the damage is already done.

I don't buy the idea that people will like the bill after it is passed since the thing is designed to not take effect for a couple years.....we'll have the 2010 and the 2012 election before it starts.
