As an civil engineer, how do you feel about US standards for freeway concrete (14" I believe" versus German standards (21" concrete and 27" total including base)?

I believe when US freeways are constructed they should be built to Autobahn standards, and the general contractor should be made to produce a bond to provide free repairs for the first 10 years after the construction.

German autobahns can go over 25 years without any resurfacing and with minimal repairs.

I just think it's crazy that we have to end up paying for the same stretch of road 4-times over the course of 25-years counting the loss of productivity and detour costs instead of paying maybe 50% more from the get-go.

If you've ever driven on the Pennsylvania Turpike, you'll agree the US freeway standards are not sufficient for the beating they take.

The interstate highway system produced an economic and industrial boom, and reshaped the American landscape

Great comments! We need to do that today with rapid transit to move people more efficiently and more cost effectively and put people to work. We are turning ourselves into a third world country as our government is afraid to do anything meaningful and we just gobble up more foreign oil - making our enemies richer.

Meanwhile China is spanking our butts as they develop new world technologies while we are afraid to act.

Every congressmen takes a dump to even utter rising gas tax by even a penny, but the congress won't do squat if the speculators at Goldman and JPM make the oil price fluctuate by a dollar in a week.

How do we shift this mentality so we can get some jobs created and return America to its growing potential again?
