yeah, that's my whole point....

you say 'where they can't'

i say 'where they WON'T'

there are very few circumstances in which a parent "can't" play a vital role in their kids' education....

in my case, as i stated, the schools were better then, my parents 'lucked' out in that we had a good curriculum, decent teachers, and a child with a intellectual curiosity that 'saved' her....as i said...things are different now...you simply CANNOT rely upon public education to produce a good result...you *may* get lucky, but the odds are against you...

if you are a parent with a child in public school today, what would you do?

and how in the hell can the schools be *financially* bankrupt? it certainly is not for any lack of funding....i don't have time to look up the data here, but my *guess* is that on an inflation adjusted basis, we spend far more per student now than we did a generation ago

i was just talking to a friend the other day who owns a plumbing company and he was working in a major metropolitan school district....he said that the school had an immense 'gym' with every kind of weightlifting equipt. cardio machines, you name it....he said it was like the best possible private fitness club you ever hope to join when it came to amenities .....

did you have that when you were a student? did i?

hell no....

he also said he saw teachers 'working out' (reminds me of the prisons <g>) during teaching hours and saw few students there...let me guess....

we spend millions on school 'gyms' so teachers can work out (sorta like congress, eh?) instead of using the money to pay for teacher assistants or increased teacher salaries (not that doing so would enhance the QUALITY of teachers, but i'm just addressing your point of gov't SPENDING on 'education')

the bottom line is that PARENTS are responsible for the education of their children....and if they have the misfortune to have chosen to live in a district where the schools are inferior, it is up to them to either MOVE OR supplant their kid's education...(obama doesn't seem to like vouchers)

oh i forgot to mention, my dad purchased set of collier's encyclopedias because he didn't like driving me to the library after school...

i probably learned more from my constant reading of the encyclopedias than i did from attending classes

oh and black and white with few pictures....<gg>

now we have to make sure students have laptops for social networking and spying purposes...

fuck that...and i mean it!
