Frankly it has become so rote with most, they don't even think about it..... When you enter a church you bless yourself before you go to a pew..when you get to the pew you genuflect and bless yourself again....leaving the pew, the same thing occurs.
A Catholic is never supposed to walk in front of the altar without that same ritual... If at some point, you do say a private prayer, you bless yourself when you are finished.. And, I think, there are a few self blessing within a Mass... Watch athletes during a game and see many bless themselves at various important times to them, ie shooting a foul shot in basketball, or coming up to bat in baseball..
