I was trained as a corporate lawyer and now am a full time speculator. I don't claim to know much about computers. But in investing, it often pays just to keep your eyes open and have some common sense. I'm writing this on a compaq portable that I purchased recently for about $2,800 - P 133 with a 33.6 modem - and it doesn't do much for me that my Micron desktop - p 75 with a 14.4 modem - that I purchased a couple of years ago does. At home I've got an IBM 486 dx6 that I purchased 3-4 years ago that still works pretty well along with probably the first sub-zero, a p-120 (I've drawn a blank on the name - it's the company that NEC runs today). Perhaps you can help me to find a use for a more powerful machine. In my office, I receive real-time quotes all day long from trackonline for my trading and use my portable to browse the internet, si, motley fool, thestreet.com, briefing.com, etc. at the same time. From time to time I use the microsoft works word processor to do correspondence (by the way, up until recently, the law firm where I rent space was using 286 machines connected to an AS400 and not having any problems).
