Well the Hughes RAN is backward compatible to the existing Globalstar air interface. Hughes is a QCOM licensee. But, there won't be any third generation Globalstar phone that includes the original QCOM air interface protocol.

Globalstar prefers the tethering Satellite Modem/Pico Cell concept that any phone with Bluetooth (and appropriate Bluetooth profile settings) will be able to be used for satellite communications via Globalstar. So more so tethering of a pocket modem than an actual complete phone.

People are already familiar with the tethering concept for many laptop connection instances. So it is not a new or novel idea.

Here is one for you Maurice.....

Globalstar Chairman Jay Monroe, who shocked the MSS industry last year with a major Coface funding announcement, said his company had three major areas of development. “About 120 days from now, we’ll be sending new satellites to Baikonur. Secondly, Globalstar is evolving into a consumer products company. That differentiates us from others on this panel. Finally, we are rolling out with a WiMax platform in order to become a rural broadband vendor in the near future,” said Monroe.

Now Imagine that.........Globalstar...... .A consumer products company¿¿¿¿¿

That doesn't sound like Weazel Speak™ and the Dearly Beloved????

That must have raised some eyebrows at the panel discussion.

Say goodbye to Satellite Telephones and hello to WiFi hotspot multimode LTE/WIMAX/BigLeo standalone modems.
