Haim, the simple answer is that unions are all powerful in Greece. In the longer term I think there is a 50% chance that Greece will declare bankruptcy. It's the easiest way to scale back pensions, increase retirement age to 67 or more (which is desperately needed given Greek demographics), etc.

If one takes into account early retirement schemes, such as Altersteilzeit , a simple comparison of retirement age might not portray an accurate picture.
