I am amazed by how concerned conservatives are suddenly about Medicare...

I don't know how much of that concern is Medicare, itself. The concern is the deficit/debt. If Medicare is projected to collapse and you take half a trillion of potential cost savings out of Medicare to pay for Reform, then you're either going to have to let Medicare collapse, which is politically possible, find the money to save it somewhere else, which would likely be to raise taxes, or just put it on the credit card.
