The pressure to cut the deficit is huge. Twenty five years ago, even Reagan raised taxes under that pressure.

I agree with that. I am just making the point that the idea that this bill is going to save $138 billion during the next 10 years is a fantasy. That number is based on Congress actually implementing the Medicare cuts and the Cadillac tax. Those were difficult enough now when those political landmines could be traded for the very popular parts of the proposal. We'll have near universal care in a few years and those cost saving items will never show up.

When we finally do get around to attacking the deficit, this bill will just be another few hundred billion in revenue or spending decreases that we'll have to find elsewhere. That might be a worthwhile trade-off for the increased coverage, but selling this on the basis of a reduced deficit doesnt make much sense.
