How can Intel compete with a $219 for a complete computer system?

Look at these VAR prices

In a recent issue of a major magazine that goes out to computer resellers here are the prices they pay for systems they resale.

$219 --- Cyrix Media GX 150MHz system with 33.6 Modem & Sound Card
$299 --- Cyrix 6x86 PR200+, 512K cache, 4MB 3D VGA, sound card & modem
$529 --- Cyrix 6x86MX-PR233 512K cache, 4MB 3D VGA, sound card & modem

============================
These are the new prices for computers. How can Intel possibly compete in a market in which its chips prices are nearly as much as an entire computer system?

You can bet that Cyrix and AMD are out to take away the entire low end market from Intel. The channel is running out of dumped classic Pentium chips with which to asssemble inexpensive computers so they are going to turn to Cyrix and AMD.

John and Scott,

Re - "Scott, re: "Anyone have an opinion on whether businesses are buying sub 1000 pcs?"

Good question, I suspect that right now this level of PC is primarily limited to home use because the "total cost of ownership" issue makes the initial cost of a business PC relatively less significant."

I work at a Federal site in Washington State and it employees thousands of people.

Lately we have been upgrading to Micron Pentium 200 Mhz machines. Just recently I think that changed to AST Bravo's, but I will check to be sure. Don't remember what Intel chip it has.

We bought 486, 33's just 4 years ago and they are too small and slow. Why increase the frequency of that problem with the < $1,000 machines. Software and operating system size increases too fast.

For personal purchases, I would highly recommend anyone at least check price with Cybermax. I looked around alot, stores and mail order, and they had the best prices from a reputable firm, with good guarantees, tech support, etc. I figured it was maybe $400 less than a local store and $200 or more less than Dell or Gateway.

That savings of course bought 2+ more shares on Intel!

have a good day,

Lee
