I concur with your sentiments. Maybe we're going to see level design changes , brighten up things, more outside levels, etc., to make it not only different from Quake2, but better.
Cheers
Bill

Epic Misses Unreal Holidays
November 5, 1997
Despite earlier reports that the title had been postponed to the first quarter of 1998, GT Interactive would only confirm a first half release for Unreal.

A spokesman for Epic Megagames said that the title would not be ready for a holiday release, and that the company would rather delay the project rather than rush it out the door. He also said that the company would still be shooting for a Christmas release for Unreal, but it was highly unlikely that it would be finished in time. The publisher, GT Interactive was somewhat less charitable and would only tag a first half of 1998 date on the project.
Epic also revealed that they would not be releasing an early test demo, but a full shareware demo is still on schedule. The company plans to show off a Power VR native version of Unreal at the upcoming Comdex show in Las Vegas.

Posted this as it has additional info with regard to THE SHAREWARE DEMO.

Cheers
