In general the image data requirement increases in geometric proportion to the image resolution. Doubling the data only gives you a 41% increase* in resolution, so I'd call that a modest improvement at best. Since they'd have to re-shoot all the imagery anyway, I'd aim for a more significant improvement in a future version of Street View.

*Square root of 2 = 1.41

P.S. I doubt there was any bandwidth increase for the recent 3D experiment, since the results were of low quality.
