Correct--I don't believe that, but I do believe that factor (psyche) is part of what was going on (wartime mentality) and that this factor often gets overlooked in the post mortem historical dissections/discussions.

Possibly it gets overlooked because there is no accurate way of accounting for it and gets into "touchy feeley" areas where scholars are often loathe to go.

Additionally, it is my information and belief that as 130 million people nation (I think) in the early 40's we were less diversified then we are today and more united in our collective beliefs---prejudiced as they may have been. In short, the culture was much different than today and, hence, much harder for people who didn't experience to understand it.
