Peter -

re: support

I believe that no company can afford to troubleshoot every user's PC problems with a sub $200 dollar peripheral. I believe that Iomega's support policy, while it does aggravate many users, is a necessary evil. Perhaps you could find the answers you need on the Iomega web site. They've got some pretty good troubleshooting tips there.

You do have to give a credit card number for support, but if the problem turns out to be Iomega's fault you will not be charged.

As for the credit card thing, do you use your card when you go out to
eat? If so, you hand your card to a stranger, he goes away for five minutes, then brings it back to you. Why is that more secure than giving the number to someone on the phone. And don't forget that you are not liable for any charge you did not make. That's the law.

*** OT to Peter ***

I will help but I need more info. Please tell me the following:

* Operating System and release (e.g. Win95 OSR1 with service pack 1)
* Zip model (e.g. PP, SCSI, ATAPI)
* Brief description of the install procedure you used, where you got the Tools software, and it's release.

Guest is a DOSsy program that can be used instead of the full blown "Tools" install, but for Win95, you really should use tools. Guest was meant as a bootstrap pgm to allow you to get to the tools software on the Zip Tools disk.

Feel free to email me so we won't bore people silly here. I am confidant we will solve this if you haven't done so already.

P.S. Don't tell the bears here, but there is (or was) a version of the Tools software (for ATAPI Zip) on IOM's website that flat out doesn't work. When I was installing Win95 OSR2, I downloaded it and it hung me out to dry with no drive letter. Fortunately, I did not overlay the original contents of my IDE Tools disk or I'd have been SOL. That version works without any problems. I'll be glad to put it in an email attachment if you want it.

P.P.S. One other problem I encountered with the ATAPI Zip is, if you orient it on it's side, it must be rightside (eject button side) down. This is documented in the install manual, which I dutifully read when all else failed. If one installs it leftside down (or upside down if you're feeling offbeat that day) it just clicks and won't work with or even eject the disk. Then you have to use the emergency eject hole in the back. This is a small hole that is barely big enough to put a straightened paper clip in. After about 1/4 inch in, you will feel a little lever. Pushing it in gently another 1/4 inch ejects the disk. You must do it with the power off, of course.
