It was a geography problem. We had no reasonable way in.

Austria was already neutral and the Soviets had 16 Soviet Combat Divisions in East Germany at that time. And they were rebuilding the East German Army. Some were still there as an occupation force from WW II. Others were sent there to put down the German rebellion in 1953...then stayed.

Many thought the bigger Soviet plan was to use those troops as a spearhead to invade western Europe. That is why you were defending the Fulda Gap.
