Or look at how Western weaponry has handily made burning hulks of Soviet armor and planes in the two Gulf Wars and all of Israel's wars with its Arab neighbors. Arab incompetence only accounts for so much.

The Fulda Gap would have been a shooting gallery.

The Military was a "Potemkin Village" during the cold war. Look at their colossial failure in Afghanistan.

True, but we are talking about 1956, not 79. Back then they still had the WWII momentum behind them. Still well armed for that time, still angry and battle ready. Starting a conventional war with the Soviets over Hungary - close to their home turf - would be tough.
