Not too many docs can afford to lock themselves away from the 65+ population.

There are a lot of boutique practices in my neck of the woods. I've used them before. You pay with your credit card on the way out and they give you paperwork to submit to your insurance should you choose to do so. Insurance doesn't come close to covering the bill. I left one of those practices, my PCP, when I was in my early sixties because I knew I couldn't stay past 65.

These days if Warren Buffett will hand his doc $10 extra, they'll both be breaking all kinds of Federal laws.

This doctor has a particular and uncommon focus that's just what I need. I don't mind paying her fee, whatever it is. What rankles is being denied the opportunity to do that by law. And under the guise of a benefit, no less. As far as I'm concerned, it's institutionalized age discrimination. There's no help whatsoever in Medicare publications and precious little on the internet. Apparently patients with this problem either accede to the system or, like Buffet, have the resources to pay the legal fees to find a work-around. I don't mind paying for medical services but I am rankled by the notion of having to pay lawyers for advice on how to effect what should be a simply buyer/seller transaction.

I am continuing to research work-arounds on my own for now. My need for her services is neither immediate nor critical.

(Maybe I should try the ACLU...<g>)
