Being short BP, for the first time, I may make some money out of it, also for the first time.
The WSJ article is pretty damning.

All it takes is one disaster like this to cause long term damage, not to mention it sends the chill down the spine to approve on similar projects. I disagree with members of this thread who tout that safety record is great for xx years (mentioned just few days prior to this incident) since it takes just one catastrophe like this to damage those xx years of safety record.

Admittedly I don't know anything about how deep ocean drilling works, so for a lay person like me is inclined to look at the damage caused by just one incident and extrapolate to see how many such incidents are possible. For me it seems that there are just too many moving parts where one thing can go wrong to cause disaster of this magnitude. People, Processes, Technology - none of which are infallible especially at Ocean depths that are unimaginable to me. Call my paranoia driven by my ignorance, but I suspect I am a member of the majority.

By no means I am against drilling for oil --- just anti "drill baby drill no matter what" mantra. Oil should just be one component of the overall energy portfolio and we should slowly trend away from it. Natural Gas should start taking a front burner, followed by other "viable" alternatives

>>>We need someone to figure out how to shut the damn valves.<<<

The damage in terms of public perceptions is already done. Sadly I suspect that environment groups are celebrating.

If the sunken rig is blocking access, getting at valves may be a little bit of a problem.
