"Insert an independent candidate of one political flavor or another into an election and you almost guarantee that the opposing party will win."

You're assuming any 3rd party is either conservative or liberal, which was my point.

There's no telling right now what any 3rd party will look like in 2012. Every day more and more former partisans of both parties are becoming disgusted with.....both parties.

People are seeing this country, whether the Dems or Repubs are in power, is grinding the people down in a myriad of ways, some obvious, some not, but relentlessly. If you are well to do or well connected, you are fine. But the vast majority are not. What if common sense prevailed and they realized being Dem or Repub doesn't help them anyway......and they band together?

Unlikely? Not anywhere near as unlikely as just a few years ago.

"In that way whoever governs this country does so with a majority, NOT a minority, of the people's vote."

In recent history, you're batting about half.

Clinton lost the popular vote twice (43% in '92 and 49.4% in '94), but ruled eight years. Carter got 50.1%. Bush I lost in '00 (47.9%) and probably lost again in '04, though fraud was a factor (again). The last clear victor was Reagan in 1984 (58.8%), though he got just 50.8% the first time. The last clear winner (Reagan '84) was 26 years ago. Obama had 53% in '08. So two of the last eight presidents had clear majorities in the popular vote.

The people just don't effin' matter to the miscreants who hold high public office.

If you vote for the lesser of two evil candidates, Rep or Dem, you are voting for Evil. Don't throw your vote away on someone you think is Evil!

Edward Gonzalez for California District 16 - San Jose, Silicon Valley

globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com

It's long overdue we elect Congressional representatives who will uphold the constitution, are fiscally conservative, and genuinely want to do something about bureaucratic waste and massive government spending.

This is the first in a series of five profiles of candidates who I believe when elected will make a huge difference. ...

I still can't understand why most countries don't adopt the preferential voting system similar to what is used in Australia..

Of course the quality of the government isn't necessarily any better but at least a minority party can make a showing and make a difference if they can get the votes and their supporters can still have a say in the final composition of the government.

Maybe having more than two choices is too much for the general population in the US...
