I think that this is where the discontinuity exists - to my eyes Leo was referring to the postponement of revenue recognition at a "deal" level, i.e. the company was not rushing to recognize revenues at the end of a quarter, when they had the option to "bottom drawer" the order.

This differs substantially from cash received, for which value is delivered at a later date - this is the "deferred revenue" balance sheet item. Think of it in balance sheet terms: cash inflates the assets, and must therefore be balanced in the liabilities. It does so either via the P&L (inflating profit, hence retained earnings) by being recognized as revenue, or via the B/S item, deferred revenues.
