CA does pay a lot more in federal taxes than it gets federal spending ..... the decline in defense spending, high incomes and thus high income taxes, and demographics (fewer old SS recipients per capita) drive that.

AR does get more in federal spending than it pays to Washington. But you shouldn't assume thats a redstate thing.

TX also pays more in taxes than it gets in federal spending. So does GA and FL. Florida is a big surprise to me - they pay more in taxes than they get despite all those retirees and NASA. Amazing.
