And it wasn't done spur of the moment, they drifted into it. "Why not excuse them because society taught them to treat Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, etc. as genetic trash to be "purified" away?" Because that was an anomaly. While Jews were not held in the highest esteem, they didn't grow up in a society where it was ok to just kill them. Nor was it considered to be ok anywhere else in Europe.
