The process by which the Nazis rose to power wasn't exactly democratic, but then again, no one really objected. Moreover, Hitler himself had widespread popularity among those he riled up, especially the impressionable youth.

The rise to power would have met widespread opposition if the anti-Semitic sentiment in Germany didn't exist.

Like you said, German society "drifted into it," but whether it was a conscious decision or an unconcious "drift" doesn't matter. German society eventually determined that exterminating Jews was the "moral" thing to do.
