Here's a fact: How big a "deal" the oil spill is doesn't depend solely on the amount of oil involved, and for that matter, doesn't even depend MOSTLY on the amount of oil.

I suggest you read up on Ixtoc I.

That's right. You never heard of it. I wonder why? It was 140 Million gals (3.3M bbls) over 9 months. Along Texas coasts, 1,500 birds were killed -- more than that were killed with BB guns during the same period.

How serious this spill is TBD. To date, Hume is entirely correct -- the disaster is pending.
