I always wondered what I missed.

You learned more than you think in ROTC. The military is a chain of command and discipline. You follow the orders you receive and you break that down into smaller orders for those you outrank. The main difference in the military and the civilian world (and I've never been in war zone much less battle) is that any soldier has to be prepared to assume command in a combat situation when their leader has fallen.
