But that was what made the problem so big. Because of the mergers, they were able to build a whole ecosystem that depended on more and more mortgages. Despite the risks. It was a machine with the sole intent of raking in huge wads of cash at the expense of bad loans.

Hair splitting. If we had one or the other, the problem likely wouldn't have gotten so big. Since we did, there was a synergy that resulted in the global economy on the verge of collapse.

Viewing them in isolation from one another masks that synergy.
