You have not given this much thought. Israel is our closest ally. They are the only democracy in the Middle East. They are the only country that shares values with America in the Middles East. They are the only pro-American country in the Middle East. There are 250,000 US citizens living in Israel. There are many American companies with considerable assets in Israel. Intel has design centers and fabs there for instance. They are our only dependable military ally in the Middle East. The list goes on...

These are some of the reasons we have a vital interest in Israel.

Elroy, your POV here kind of goes sideways to the general thinking. I suspect a lot of it is due to your residence now in the Philippines. Which I regard, by the way, as not part of "Western Civ."

To most, Western Civilization is "Christendom." That is Europe from the Middle ages onward. And it's English speaking extensions. Australia, NZ, the USA, Canada. Israel is an outpost of Western Civilization in the middle of the third world hell-hole that comprises the Middle East. Would it be easier to work with the ME if Israel didn't exist? Of course. But it does exist and it is the spearhead for the 21'st Century Civilization in that area.

Islam is a Medieval Culture that stops cold any real prosperity and happiness in the areas it dominates. It will lose out, long term, because it's people get a good look at how Western Civ works and they want some.

A good example of why Western Civ wins? The Universe sings. So does Western Civ. Islam forbids it.

Elroy, do you think peace is a state of nature? It is not. It is Pax Americana that keeps the shipping lanes of the Persian Gulf and the Eastern Med open -- until Barack Obama declared no country could tell another what to do and he wanted out of the superpower business. Now Turkey and Iran are starting to rattle their sabres, to test reactions. If Obama reacts by jettisoning America's allies, he is announcing: Jump ball, guys, go for it.

Then we will see a dozen wars break out.

By the way, Israel may lead the list of American allies, but Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the Gulfies are on it too. If Iran decides it's free to deal with unrest at home by extending its borders abroad, how many Gulfies do you think will survive?

Weakness invites aggression.

The Romans understood it. Si vis pacem, para bellum, they said.
