Actually BP has compiled a history of operating problems in recent years and not just on deepwater rigs but onshore as well.

The Texas City refinery explosion
The near loss of the Thunderhorse platform
The Trans-Alaska pipeline leak in 2006 which shut down all of Alaska's production for awhile
Now the Deepwater Horizon blowout

Such a string of catastrophes within the past five years is suggestive of a problem in the company's "corporate culture".

Right, they had a ton of violations related to, for example Texas City. Do you use that as the basis for a conviction (figuratively) on this disaster?

I think the RIGHT thing to do is to look at the facts pertaining to Horizon, and if the facts show their incompetence caused this disaster, then they're to be harshly dealt with.

I have to say, nobody I've talked with sees this the same way I do -- here or elsewhere. Practically everyone wants BP strung up by the nuts, period.
