As a very small boy I vividly recall the day when my father smugly remarked that Japanese products were cheap junk. Sure enough, my beloved plastic squirt gun was made in Japan! But 10-15 years later I was utterly blown away by the rapidly improving quality of Japanese electronics, cameras, motorcycles, fabrics, bicycle parts, film, autos, etc. Reality tends to come along and bite us in the ass at regular intervals. The Bay of Pigs fiasco, civil rights struggles, Vietnam, the 1970s oil crisis and inflation, the Iranian hostage crisis, the September 11 attacks, trade deficits, falling USD, the 2008 financial collapse, etc. You mentioned earlier that you watched our election debates for the first time in 2008, and were surprised at the amount of time spent stroking the public about American greatness. While that may seem remarkable to you, I simply regard it as part of the normal American campaign hoopla along with politicians kissing babies and eating regional food on the campaign trail. Our politicians have to cover all the bases. Your observation reminds me of your earlier surprise upon discovering that much of the western USA is arid. Well, duh... of course it is!
