"Fact is no one knows what to do about the ones here already - but obviously it will have to be some sort of compromise between kick'em all out and total amnesty."

See, I KNOW that certain members of your team insist on "kick'em all out". One member of your team is for kicking out children born here to illegal parents, RETROACTIVELY!

My own take is, crack down HARD on employers, leave them with NO jobs, let them "deport" themselves and only after a year of that, adopt the remainder. No border closing necessary.

I disagree with that policy. There are millions of educated Asians, Middle Easterners, Europeans etc who are denied immigration status, so why should they be denied while we instead allow in a class of people who are already over represented and on the whole are less educated? A case could be made that it is racist to insist that our immigration quota be filled by a single class of people at the exclusion of other equally, if not more deserving nationalities just because they aren't Latinos.
