On another front, Film director James Cameron, an innovative expert at very deep water discovery and filming, was shunned by BP on his offer of assistance. Cameron, you will remember, filmed 3 or 4 times as deep as BP’s rig in discovering and researching both RMS Titanic, the German Battleship Bismarck. Cameron told reporters his contacts in deep water engineering are some of the most brilliant and ingenious deep water experts in the world. He called the people at BP “morons,” continuing by describing his friends in the industry saying:

If people like James Cameron, or perhaps Robert Ballard who discovered Titanic using deep water technologies no one else had dreamed of, are being turned away by BP, it would seem there is little hope for saving the Gulf of Mexico. If Simmons’ estimations are correct, America’s Gulf coastline, and the Atlantic seaboard may soon be laid to waste. If his estimates are correct, Deep Water Horizon may have already outdone the notorious Exxon Valdez by many millions of barrels. Apparently Simmons has evidence to this effect and the fact that much more oil is submerged rather than floating on the top of Gulf waters.

BP Official Admits to Damage BENEATH THE SEA FLOOR

...loss of integrity in the well itself may explain why BP is drilling its relief wells more than ten thousand feet beneath the leaking pipes on the seafloor (and see this).

Yesterday, recently-retired Shell Oil President John Hofmeister said that the well casing below the sea floor may have been compromised:

[Question] What are the chances that the well casing below the sea floor has been compromised, and that gas and oil are coming up the outside of the well casing, eroding the surrounding soft rock. Could this lead to a catastrophic geological failure, unstoppable even by the relief wells?

John Hofmeister: This is what some people fear has occurred. It is also why the "top kill" process was halted. If the casing is compromised the well is that much more difficult to shut down, including the risk that the relief wells may not be enough. If the relief wells do not result in stopping the flow, the next and drastic step is to implode the well on top of itself, which carries other risks as well.
