Global Positioning & Navigation News of November 5 reports "Sony plans to discontinue marketing its NVX-160 car navigation unit in the United States market." There was no implication in the short report that Sony was replacing its product with an upgrade.

Sony is Trimble's main competition in Japan, and therefore a significant global competitor. (I believe Sony has stated that they have sold about 500,000 car nav units in Japan.) If they are pulling out of the US market, that is pretty good news.

Prudential's report issued on 10/24/97 by Lisa Bogaty and Tim Goebel gave Novatel a hold rating.

Earnings estimate for Q4 are 28 cents VS 4 cents last year and 18 cents in Q3. Estimates are for 84 cents in 1998.

Comments made in the report:
Revenues were strong on WAAS program but light on other businesses. Hold rating is due to lack of visibility on Non WAAS program. Novatel is expecting Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Canada to Install WAAS also.

Overall, the analysts sound more cautiously optimistic than their hold rating suggests.
