Just received my copy of "Searchlight" the quarterly publication of the AIDS ReSearch Alliance. Good article about cross-resistance (old news, but an excellent summary of issues & resistance testing methods)...

healthcg.com

Note: "Genotyping" is determining the actual molecular sequence of a gene (or parts thereof) and this article talks about the limitations - specifically, that commercial testing can only look at a certain number of sequences & that sometimes, a mutation in a totally unsuspected region can confer resistance.

"Phenotyping" is determing how an organism behaves in a given environment, such as dumping various antivirals into a live culture of HIV & measuring the results - you don't have to know the genetic sequences to determine how the little bastard actually behaves in the "real world". Probably get more useful results, but has (until recently) been difficult to do high-throughput.

Also, is anyone watching Affymetrix? They appear to have some very hot genotyping technology....
