Way more than 50 wells in deep water in the Gulf:

gomr.mms.gov

From 1992 through 2008, 466 wells were drilled in the GOM at depths of 5000 feet or greater.

During that period, 2,460 wells were drilled in the GOM at depths from 1500 - 4999 feet.

The first deepwater production began in 1979 from Shell's Cognac field.

(Heh, no wonder he has me on ignore.)
