Good Morning Paul, thanks for the good news. Here's a little more.. Server Sales surge in Japan..

PC Server Shipment Volumes Increasing

November 3, 1997 (TOKYO) -- The number of PC servers shipped in Japan in the fiscal year through March 1998 is expected to reach 191,500, for a rise of 87 percent.

This would greatly exceed the growth rate of shipments of UNIX servers, which should increase by about 19 percent from the previous fiscal year.

The data is based on the estimates for domestic shipment volumes and shipment values of server products for fiscal 1997 made by "Nikkei Market Access," a membership information service.

In terms of value, shipments of PC servers are expected to reach 233.9 billion yen (US$1.933 billion), which would represent an increase of 88 percent. The figure nearly matches the shipment value for office computers for small business use, which is expected to be about 280 billion yen (US$2.314 billion) (see chart).

In analyzing the substantial growth in PC servers, Nikkei Market Access said that their prices, at about 1.2 million yen to 1.5 million yen (US$9,920 to US$12,400), are only about a tenth of the average price of a UNIX server.

Nikkei Market Access also predicted sustained growth in shipments of server products up to 2002. It estimates that PC servers will nearly catch up with mainframes and UNIX servers in shipment amount by the end of fiscal 2000 and will exceed 1 trillion yen (US$8.3 billion) in fiscal 2001.

Detailed data will be presented in the November issue of Nikkei Market Access Report and Nikkei Market Access Online (http://www.nikkeibp.co.jp/MA/).
