Z, we as a society aren't really asking ourselves, "How can we compete better in a global economy?"

Well OK, many people are, but most are afraid of the answer. It may mean lower wages, lower benefits, and lower standards of living in order to compete against, for example, Chinese and Indian workers taking outsourced jobs. And yes, that may also mean the big corporation execs make out like bandits.

Or it may mean being more innovative, more educated, more productive than our global competitors. Heck, we invented most of the things that our global competitors are now producing better. There's absolutely no reason why can't we continue to be on the leading edge of the global economy.

But that means we need to focus on what's important, not what is feel-good nonsense. Having a degree, a title, union membership means nothing when the competition just does better with less.
