Hey futurists -- how long will Windows NT be on top?

Five years? Ten years? Anybody imagine we'll still be using Microsoft Windows as a platform in twenty years? I personally think MS Windows sucks, and I am tired of everybody telling me it was the "terrific marketing skills" of Bill Gates that made it happen. The truth is that market forces pressure the public into accepting one operating system -- just like we have one standard for TV channels. But when the system gets too old, then you can anticipate a sudden change. There is nothing wrong with companies like SGI and Netscape pushing the platform envelope -- one day it will give suddenly and collapse and they'll be on top. It might happen sooner than you think. --JD
